Discretion and Detachment

An interpreter within the InterTrad network must never express judgments regarding the attitudes, choices, opinions, or beliefs conveyed during an assignment.

The interpreter respects the autonomy of the speakers involved in the mission and must never substitute their own thoughts for those of the participants.

Acting solely as an interpreter, the professional serves as an interface and does not promote or offer any additional services; their role is to give voice to the participants, without any other prerogatives.

Neutrality and Impartiality

An InterTrad interpreter must remain neutral in all situations, avoiding any attempt to replace or influence the thoughts of the participants. They carry out their duties with full impartiality.

Their words must accurately and faithfully reflect the participants’ intentions. Personal opinions or subjectivity are strictly excluded.

During assignments, the interpreter separates the words they interpret from any personal thoughts they might have. They must maintain distance and neutrality regarding the situations they encounter.

Accuracy and Fidelity

An InterTrad interpreter conveys conversations, meetings, and speeches in full while preserving their meaning.

Translations are rendered in another language without rephrasing. The interpreter ensures fidelity and precision, respecting all nuances, without altering, adding, or omitting any words or meanings.

If a misunderstanding or ambiguity arises due to language or intended meaning, and if questions, answers, or statements could be misinterpreted or require clarification, the interpreter may request reformulation, explaining the reason, to facilitate mutual understanding. Under no circumstances may the interpreter take initiative on behalf of the participants.

The interpreter is a professional in oral translation, not a cultural expert on migrant populations. They act as a liaison and interface between languages and cultures to facilitate communication. They do not mediate, regulate, or alter the content of exchanges.

Confidentiality and Professional Secrecy

An InterTrad interpreter is bound to maintain professional confidentiality during all assignments. They must not disclose, circulate, or share any information, statements, or exchanges obtained, whether knowingly or unknowingly, from participants. Interpreters are subject to the same rules of confidentiality and professional secrecy as the parties they serve.
